Pulsar · Field guide · No. 25 · What ASC is, when automation beats hand-built campaigns, and the signal + guardrails that make it work.

When to Let Meta Drive

Advantage+ Shopping hands the targeting, placements and optimization to Meta’s algorithm. Powerful when you feed it well — a black box when you don’t.

01

What Advantage+ Shopping is

Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns (ASC) are Meta’s automated campaign type: broad targeting, automatic placements, and the algorithm optimizing straight to purchases. You hand over the levers you’d normally set by hand.

ASC isn’t magic and it isn’t a scam — it’s an engine. It’s only as good as the fuel you give it.
02

When it wins

With enough conversion volume and strong signal (a healthy pixel + CAPI + high match quality), ASC often beats a hand-built campaign — it explores combinations no human would test and settles fast.

03

When it doesn’t

Thin data, weak events, or a tiny budget and ASC can’t learn — the same learning-phase wall, just automated. Below the volume it needs, a tight manual campaign you can control usually wins.

Use ASC when…Use manual when…
strong signal + enough purchase volumelow volume — it can’t exit learning
you want scale and breadthyou need precise control / niche audiences
clean events + exclusions in placetracking is still shaky (fix that first)
04

Feed it strong signal

The fuel is your data. A well-matched pixel + Conversions API and high EMQ are what let ASC find real buyers. Garbage in, garbage out — automation amplifies whatever signal you give it, good or bad.

05

The one real lever: existing-customer budget cap

ASC hides most controls, but keeps one that matters: the existing-customer budget cap — the share of spend allowed to go to people who already bought. Set it so ASC actually prospects instead of re-selling to your list (the exclusion principle, built in).

06

Guardrails, not micromanagement

The failure mode is treating ASC like a manual campaign and editing it hourly. Set it up right, then let it run.

Give it a handful of strong creatives (tested hooks — No. 21).
Set the existing-customer cap so it prospects.
Confirm clean events + buyer exclusions; verify tracking first.
Resist over-editing — every change resets its learning.

The through-line of this whole field guide: measurement first. Automation only works when the signal underneath it is clean — which is everything the earlier lectures were about.
