Pulsar · Field guide · No. 29 · Why half the funnel is after the click, message match, speed, one clear action, and testing the page instead of the ad.

The Ad Got the Click. Now What?

You paid for the click — the landing page decides if it becomes a customer. The biggest, cheapest wins in advertising often aren’t in the ad at all.

01

Half the funnel is after the click

The leak map doesn’t stop at the ad. You’ve already paid for the click; whether it becomes a customer is decided on the page — and that’s the half most advertisers never optimize.

You can’t out-target a bad landing page. It makes every ad you run look broken.
02

Message match — continue the promise

The page must pick up exactly where the ad left off. Ad says “50% off summer straps” → the page opens on 50% off summer straps. A mismatch is an instant bounce — you paid for the click and got nothing.

03

Speed is conversion

Every second of load time bleeds buyers — and most of your traffic is on a phone on mobile data. A slow page loses people before they see the offer. Mobile-first, fast-first.

i
Load speed is a conversion lever hiding as a tech metric. Fixing it often beats any new creative.
04

One clear action

One primary CTA, above the fold, unmistakable. Every extra link, menu and pop-up is a chance to leak. Remove the distractions and make the next step obvious.

05

Answer the abandonment reasons

People stall for reasons (No. 20): shipping worry, trust worry, doubt. Put the answers on the page — reviews, guarantees, returns, secure-checkout, real photos — so the objection dies before it becomes a bounce.

06

Test the page, not just the ad

When results are flat, advertisers change the ad. Often the cheaper win is the page.

Match the headline + hero to the ad’s promise.
Cut load time (images, scripts, mobile).
One CTA; strip distractions.
Add trust, then A/B test the page like you test creative.
